Andrew Mayer is both a talented author and very dapper fellow! I realized I have very few photos of men on the blog – and in fact, I’ve noticed that few photography tutorials or gear demos use male models. It’s frequently a male photographer shooting a female model… which is pretty odd considering how many super talented women photographers there are out there!

So male models (or would-be models), get in touch!

Some advice and tips on what to look for when booking a wedding photographer.
You’re engaged to be married! It’s a thrilling, joyful thing. Next stage – planning your celebration. Also very exciting, but this can also be stressful; with a ton of details to juggle, people’s opinions to field, and financial issues to consider.
First steps include choosing your date, venue, and of course, deciding what to wear (my personal favorite part). Locking in your vendors is a big part of these early decisions – good photographers, florists, and caterers often book a year or more in advance. I’ve had clients contact me up to a year in advance, and I honestly love it when people plan this far ahead. It isn’t always possible, but I do recommend not leaving things until the last moment to ensure you have as much choice as possible. For cases where I’m pre-booked, I have a small number of local photographers who’s work and professionalism I feel confident about recommending in my place.
But what to look for in a wedding photographer? And once you find someone you like, how do you proceed? In no particular order, here are some tips I recommend. You’ll notice most of these aren’t about the quality of images, but of the business of photography. There are a ton of extremely talented shooters out there, but you only want to work with someone who is organized.
A few more tips for the actual ceremony day….
Don’t hesitate to tell your photographer if something special is going to happen! Of course, we’re always prepared for random moments of amazing, but it never hurts to give us a heads up.
Drink water and remember to eat! Sounds crazy, but you’d be surprised how easy it is to forget!
Relax, have fun, and trust your photographer. You’ve chosen well, your vendors will take it from here.
Anything I missed? Leave a comment and let me know what advice you’d offer to someone looking to book a photographer or vendor for their wedding.
Golden hour. A sequin dress. A model willing to pose in the cold. All of this makes for a very ‘San Francisco’ feel to this shoot.

My longest relationship by far has been with this city, with San Francisco. I love the fog, the chilly summers, the Victorian houses, the diverse culture. I moved here when I was 20 years old and as much as I love to travel elsewhere, coming home to you, San Francisco, is where I find my heart.

Preview of a recent shoot.

Out with the old and in with the new! I had a blast last night running a photo booth at the return of the In Bed With Fairy Butch cabaret show at the Blue Macaw nightclub in San Francisco. It was the perfect way to finish up what’s been a very cool year for me. I’ve had some good trips, continued to work with some amazing clients, and am very excited for what’s coming up in 2012!
If I photographed you last night, click any of the images below for the full gallery of your shots, you can download or order prints through the gallery on on Facebook – just find your photos, go to the ‘purchase’ tab, and select ‘download’. Happy New Year Everyone!

I unabashedly love Halloween. Not only is fall one of the best times of the year for the Bay Area (warm weather, wonderful golden light), I love the spooky evenings, the costumes, and I always take a trip to Arata’s Pumpkin Farm in Half Moon Bay to pick up some decorative gourds. Arata’s is a wonderfully weird place to visit. This year their theme seems to be ‘Egypt’ and no, I’ve got no idea what that has to do with Halloween. There’s a petting zoo, pony rides, and a terrific hay maze you should plan on getting lost in.
Fall is also a really great time to start thinking about updating your family portraits. It’s still nice enough outside to photograph outdoors, and you can use the images for a holiday card. Drop a line if you’ve been thinking about a family photo session, there’s still plenty time before the winter colds sets in.
This year one of my cousins was visiting San Francisco for the first time with a few of her friends, so I dragged them down the peninsula to enjoy the day with me.

Around this time last year, we adopted Paloma from a rescue group, All Creatures Healing Network. And it was one of the best decisions we’ve made made. She’s grown into a lazy, fluffy beast who fills our lives with dander and a lot of cuddling.
If you’re considering a pet, please investigate your local shelter or rescue group! There are so many wonderful animals out there who need a home, and not only kittens – adopting an older cat or dog is a great option if you are a working professional who would rather not have your toes attacked in the wee hours of the morning.
These kitties are the current crop of adoptable babies from All Creatures, I photographed them for their adoption site as well as for our annual holiday card – I’ll post the image we chose as we get closer to the winter season. In the meantime, check out these cuties, and you can contact the agency directly if you’re interested in fostering or possibly adopting one of these rambunctious little cats.
